Father Joseph V. Gallagher, former Paulist president, dies at 85  
Funeral Masses will take place in Grand Rapids, Mich., and New York City for Father Joseph V. Gallagher, C.S.P., who died Nov. 16. The former Paulist president was instrumental in conceiving and implementing the Paulist Fathers mission direction statement and successfully took the order through the changes of Vatican II.

It was on March 6, 1858, that Pope Pius IX issued the Nuper Nonnulli document that led to the founding of the Paulist Fathers. Now, 150 years later, pilgrims from across North America will have the chance to walk in Father Hecker’s footsteps during Hecker Week in Rome. Pilgrims will participate in the Paulist 150th Anniversary events at Santa Susanna, the Paulist-run American church in Rome, see Father Hecker points of interest and explore Rome on their own.

Paulist National Catholic Evangelization Association: 30 years of sharing the Gospel  
St. Paul's mission was to spread the Gospel to all of the known world. Paulist founder Father Isaac T. Hecker's vision was to share the Catholic faith throughout North America. Those legacies of faith continue in the work of the Paulist National Catholic Evangelization Association (PNCEA). Through its programs, online courses and materials, PNCEA spreads awareness of the need for Catholic evangelization and gives Catholics the tools and resources needed to carry out the evangelizing mission of the church.

“Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love.” This well-known prayer was on the lips and in the hearts of the 40 people who attended the East Coast Holy Spirit Retreat June 22-24 at Mount Paul, the Paulist retreat center in Oak Ridge, NJ. Veteran retreat master Father D. Bruce Nieli, C.S.P., led the group on a spiritual journey that connected Paulist spirituality to contemporary culture and beyond.

The making of a relic  
Visitors and parishioners at St. Paul the Apostle in New York witnessed an unusual event just before the regular Sunday Mass on Feb. 18. In a ceremony of prayer, long expanses of purple cloth were hung around the tomb of Paulist founder Father Isaac Thomas Hecker. In preparation for the opening of his cause for sainthood in the Archdiocese of New York, a great prayer cloth was created. Snippets of this cloth will be attached to prayer cards, a long standing custom in the Roman Catholic Church, to serve as relics, asking for Father Hecker's intercession.
