Double-dipping allowed!

November 17, 2014

There are myriad ways to support the Paulists and reduce your tax bill. In this profile, we will review some of the possibilities to help your year-end finances while helping the Paulist Fathers.  The Paulists are always blessed by the support of our patrons, and extend our thanks to our generous benefactors.

The Power of two: Matching gifts

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to get your paycheck and discover that it was for double or triple the usual amount? Think what you could do with that kind of windfall! How does doubling or tripling your gifts to the Paulist Fathers sound? It may be possible! Ask your benefits manager if your employer has a matching gift program. Many companies offer matching gifts programs to support the philanthropic and volunteer interests of their employees. Most of these corporations match dollar for dollar and some programs even triple the amount of the gift.

In order to maximize your gift, you can support the education of men studying for the priesthood and showing your dedication to the mission of the Paulist Fathers. Designate your donation to Catholic University: Paulist Fathers’ Education Fund. By designating your gift to the education fund, your gift is eligible for a matching gift program. This special gift will go directly to support the education of Paulist seminarians studying for the priesthood at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Tuition and related educational expenses are one of the Paulist Fathers’ largest annual expenses.

We have all heard or experienced the high cost of higher education. Especially costly are special areas of study where there is limited competition, such as the course of study our seminarians can only acquire at Catholic University. The cost of educating a single seminarian exceeds $55,000 per year. This cost includes tuition, books, campus fees, living expenses, travel and supplies. With your support of the education fund, The Paulists will be able to focus on expanding vocation recruitment. Your gift will enable the Paulists to attract more young men into the Missionary Society of St. Paul.

If your employer requires an Employer Identification Number (EIN)/Federal Tax ID number, please use 74-3188659. Mail your donation and completed matching gift form from your employer to:

Paulist Fathers Office of Mission Advancement
Paulist Fathers Education Fund
415 West 59th St.
New York, NY  10019

Your personal gift and the matched contribution will be designated for Paulist Fathers seminarians’ tuition at the Catholic University of America.

Reduce your tax liability with a year-end gift of stock

Why should you give a gift of stock to the Paulist Fathers? Because it helps both you and the Paulists!

If you are making a donation as an end-of-year gift or supporting the Annual Paulist Appeal, consider making a stock gift instead of sending a personal check; it can save you money and be beneficial to both you and the Paulists Fathers.

If the stock you donate has increased in value from the date of purchase, you might avoid capital gains taxes by making this stock a gift to the Paulist Fathers. As a result of the increase in value, the Paulists will receive a larger gift, and your generosity is maximized. It’s this simple: you purchased stock at X amount, and the stock value has increased since your purchase. You donate the stock to the Paulists, and, upon the Paulists selling of the stock, you will receive the full value of the stock sale as a tax deduction, thereby avoiding capital gains tax.

This transaction benefits both the giver and the receiver; only the IRS sees a reduction in revenue. This tax policy is an incentive to increase citizens’ philanthropy. It is neither illegal nor unethical to arrange your financial affairs to comply with the IRS laws, keep your taxes as low as legally possible, and provide the Paulists with the largest possible contribution.
