What’s the difference between summer reading and reading the rest of the year? Not much. Agreed there’s supposed to be more time in the summer to enjoy the things we want to read as opposed to what we have to read. After polling my colleagues, here are some things we agree on for the coming months: sun, fun and a good book. Here are a few good books, all available for order at paulistpress.com:
Reading this book is like being swept up into a symphony. Each phrase hitting just the right note, easing away some false misconception I had no strength against. Read that: this is my favorite of the lot. It’s cultural, poetic, and biblical reflections resonate with each line of the Lord’s Prayer. One of Mr. Mendonça’s admirers, the late and great poet Eugénio de Andrade, wrote: “This is writing that prefers poverty to luxury, simplicity to complication…” Figuratively speaking, this has “gift book” written all over it.
Readers never tire of books on Henri Nouwen. This book is the companion to a Canadian radio series. The authors’ look at this important spiritual writer’s life is enriched with the personal accounts of some of the people closest to him: friends, family, and colleagues. A 12-page photo section is included. Michael Higgins is the official biographer for Henri Nouwen.
This book takes an honest look at two controversial events in Christian history, showing in what ways the seemingly different historical events are related and undoing several misconceptions about both. This book is unique due to the combination of the two topics in one book. It brings the average reader up-to-date with the latest research. And really, who isn’t interested in getting back at every Catholic-basher’s favorite curse?
Written by the best-selling and extremely engaging author of Where the Hell Is God?, this accessible volume is for everyone who wonders how to pray, everyone who wonders what happens when you pray, and everyone who wonders if God hears our prayers. This Australian Jesuit has an ear for prose having earned a doctoral degree in cinema studies in 2004 from Melbourne University.
This 40th Anniversary edition has sold well over 1 million copies. This is a classic offering profound advice about making your way in a difficult world, finding one’s calling, and taking a road less traveled.
