Thomas Dove, C.S.P. (1934 – 2020)

October 2, 2020

With sadness, we announce that Thomas Dove, C.S.P., died early this morning, October 2, 2020, at Victorian Post Acute Care Center in San Francisco, CA. He was 86.

The cause of death was COVID-19.

He was born on March 2, 1934.

Hailing from Portland, OR, Tom was a native son of St. Philip Neri Church (which was served by the Paulists from its founding in 1912 to 2016).

In September, 1952, he entered our then-minor seminary in Baltimore, MD. He entered our novitiate on September 6, 1954, and made his final promises on September 8, 1958.

Tom was ordained a priest by Cardinal Francis Spellman on May 1, 1961.

He served his pastoral year from 1961 to 1962 at the Paulist Center in Boston and then served three years as an assistant pastor at St. Rose of Lima Church in Layton, UT.

From September, 1965, to January, 1975, he served at the Catholic Information Center in Los Angeles, CA.

He then worked through June, 1976, at Paulist Press.

From June, 1976, to February, 1985, he was director of the Catholic Information Center in Toronto, ON, and served at St. Peter’s Church.

He then moved to Old St. Mary’s Church in Chicago where he served for one year on the staff before his tenure as pastor from 1986 to 1992.

He was associate pastor at St. Patrick Church in Memphis (1992 to 1994) and Old St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco (1994 to 1999).

He continued to live at Old St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco through August, 2019, when he moved to Victorian Post Acute Care Center.

Since 2014, he had been prohibited from functioning as a priest after a credible accusation of sexual misconduct with a minor female was received. The misconduct took place when he served in Los Angeles in the 1970s.

His funeral will be held at Old St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco on a date to be announced later. He will be cremated and his ashes will be interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, CA.

We pray for the repose of Tom’s soul, and for the healing of those he harmed in ministry.
